| Description | Objective: To acquire essential notions of ancient and modern conceptions of Nature. To become aware of the differences and of the relationships between understanding of phenomena and knowledge of reality. To understand the possible relationships between knowledge of Nature and human values. Content: 1) Classic philosophical views of Nature a) Ancient Greek philosophy of Nature b) Ancient and traditional Chinese views of Nature c) Main Christian philosophers (e.g. Augustine, Thomas Aquinas) 2) The view from modern science a) Defining aspects of modern science b) Power and limitations of modern scientific methodology c) Possible metaphysical implications of current scientific theories 3) Relationship between understanding of phenomena and knowledge of reality 4) Relationship between knowledge of Nature and human values Teaching Mode: Lectures, Group Discussions, Presentations, Personal Reading Assessment Mode: Paper |
