| Description | Teaching Objective: After the course of Pre-Ch’in Philosophy, this course emphasises the changed idea of Confucianism and Taoism in the Han, Wei and Ch’in Dynasties. Teaching Content: The thought of the Ch’in and Han eras is a continuation of the Pre-Ch’in developments, but with an intermingling of the various currents and with pervasive influence of the Yin-Yang school. Tung Chung Shu’s exclusion of the non-Confucian scholars stifled the creativity of Chinese thought. Yet the thought of the Wei and Ch’in Dynasties is characterized by a turning against tradition and an escape from the political turmoil of the time into transcendental aloofness. The revival of the thought of Chuang Tzu and of the Book of Changes gives birth to the Metaphysical School.
