| Description | Teaching Objective: This course is an overview of the Church History in the Early and Medieval periods, taking into account the more significant historical events that contributed in the foundation, establishment, and development of Christianity in the world. “Thus the Church, at once ‘a visible association and a spiritual community’, goes forward together with humanity and experiences the same earthly lot which the world does. She serves as a leaven and as a kind of soul for human society as it is to be renewed in Christ and transformed into God’s family” (GS40). Teaching Content: Introduction to Church History. The Sources and Content on the life and Teaching of Jesus of Nazareth. The Community of the Twelve, the Apostolic Church and Paul’s Mission. The beginning of Liturgical Formulas and Canonical Legislations. The Persecutions and the Cult of the Martyrs. The Expansion of the Church in the Mediterranean World. Constantine and the ‘peace’ of the Church. The Pre-eminence of the Roman Church. The Ecumenical Councils. The Heresies, Movements, and Controversies in the Early Church. The Rise and Development of Monasticism. The Holy Roman Empire Christendom. The Church in the Feudal System and the Investiture Controversy. The ‘Great Schism’. The Crusades. The Avignon Papacy.
