| Description | Teaching Objective: This seminar intends to examine the development of the theology of Original Sin within the past 2,000 years of the Church’s theological history from an in-depth historical perspective. Through the seminar, students will have a better understanding of the notion of the theological thinking of Original Sin. Teaching Content: Original Sin belongs to the core religious belief of Christianity, in particular, it is bound up with other areas of theology, i.e. Soteriology, Christian Anthropology, Mariology and the like. Hence, wherever there is any slight re-interpretation on Original Sin by the Church, the Church inevitably makes a corresponding change in its understandings of what salvation is. This is what we call a slight move in one part affecting the situation as a whole. The theological thinking of Original Sin takes root in the Scripture, developed during the Patristic Period, and eventually evolved into a complete system by St. Augustine. Following the tradition of St. Augustine, great thinkers of the Church, e.g. Anselm, St. Thomas, etc., have continued to develop the theology of Original Sin. However, from the 20th century, with the rapid development of the Theory of Evolution, modern psychology and other new thinking, and their wide dissemination, the Church has been facing serious challenges ever against its traditional theological thinking of Original Sin. Nevertheless, theologians of the Church of the 20th Century have reacted promptly. They tried to construe Original Sin, which is an ancient topic, yet always has a new charm, at a brand new angle. Kierkegaard, Karl Rahner, Ratzinger and Gutierrez are among those who have made a valuable contribution to meet these new challenges. In short, the new theological thinking of Original Sin of the Church does not invalidate its traditional counterpart, or rather it enriches and deepens the latter.
