| Description | Teaching Objective: The Catholic Church has experienced a complex and turbulent missionary history and ecclesiastical development in Mainland China. The teaching objective is to help students to analyze rationally the different aspects of the issues involved; to reflect upon the historical events from the perspective of their own faith experiences, and to become familiar with the main historical primary source materials and secondary literature of the history of the Church in China. Teaching Content: This course includes a general introduction to the historiography of the Catholic Church in China. It covers the period between 635 AD and the present. The changing methodology, the wide variety of sources, the different genres and interdisciplinary interpretations of the historiography, as well as their contemporary relevance for the study of Chinese culture and religions will be discussed. Some specific key issues like the Rites Controversy and the Boxer Movement will be analyzed and presented in more detail. Teaching Mode: Seminar Assessment Mode: Paper |
