| Description | Teaching Objective: The course is an overview of the Church History in the Late Medieval, Modern and Contemporary periods, taking into account the more significant historical events that contributed to the development of Christianity and its presence and influence in the society and the world. “Thus the Church, at once ‘a visible association and a spiritual community,’ goes forward together with humanity and experiences the same earthly lot which the world does. She serves as a leaven and as a kind of soul for human society as it is to be renewed in Christ and transformed into God's family” (GS40). Teaching Content: Introduction to Church History. The State of the Church after the ‘Great Schism’. The Inquisition and the Medieval Heresies. The Missionary Activities in the Age of Discovery in America and Asia. The Reformation and the Counter-Reformation. The Council of Trent. Various Movements and Currents of Thought inside and outside the Church in the 17th, 18th & 19th century. Missionary Movements and Founders in the 18th & 19th century. The First and Second Vatican Councils. The Pontificates of the 19th and 20th century.
