Description | Teaching Objective: To teach Lonergan’s method in theology, with a view to help students grasp the basic method for research, as it is a transcendental method; The method in theology, therefore, forms a solid methodological foundation for a critical enquiry of traditional and modern theologies. Teaching Content: In his book Insight: A Study of Human Understanding, Lonergan has proved, with ‘water-tight’ demonstration, that man is endowed with a dynamic cognitional structure which is the basic pattern of cognitional operations, consisting of four successive and related levels. Upon this solid platform of cognitional structure, Lonergan is able to construct his method in theology, namely, research, interpretation, history, dialectic, foundations, doctrines, systematics and communications.
