Description | Teaching Objective: This course is designed to introduce students to the human side of religion, where scientific and social research methods can be applied. Social, political, economical and cultural conceptual tools will be used wherever they serve to deepen our understanding of the complexity of the religious phenomena. In short, sociology of religion is a useful key unlocking the dynamics of the human community. Teaching Content: 1. A brief review of the classical tradition 2. The individual’s aspects: personal experience, systems of meaning, identity 3. Theories, with emphasis on the Rational Choice Theory 4. Dynamics of religious collectivities: sects. Cults, denominations, church 5. Religion and social change 6. Social research in Catholicism (Conversion, social class, gender, ethnicity, vocation, parish evaluation, etc.) 7.
