| Description | Teaching Objective: This course aims at offering guidance for the students on a deep understanding of agape the core concept of Christian faith, and of eros the key concept in western philosophy. Students will be taken from the viewpoint of Catholicism to look at the distinctions rather than the separation between the two concepts, in which case they will get hold of the possibility of integration in dealing with the question of love from the theological aspect with the philosophical one. Moreover, this course also addresses the issues of love and desire, amor sui and philia, and self-fulfillment / self-givingness (self-sacrifice), etc. by trying to apply the theories regarding the relation of agape to eros. Teaching Content: This course starts off with five groups of literature: Plato’s Symposium, Anders Nygren’s Agape and Eros (excerpts), St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae (excerpts), Paul Tillich’s works on love (excerpts) and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s encyclical letters Deus Caritas est (excerpt). Through guided readings, discussions and extended thoughts, students will better follow the meaning and connotations of the concepts of agape and eros, with their underlying internal relationship, from both Protestantism and Catholicism perspectives.
