| Description | Teaching Objective: 1. To help students establish the philosophical foundation for a study in Christology upon which students will engage in theological reflection on the mystery of Christ. Students will study key concepts in ancient Greek philosophy, traditional scholastic philosophy, and contemporary philosophy in relation to a study of Christology. 2. To help students deepen the core of faith: the mystery of incarnation. The course will also help students to be familiar with the foundation of theology, doctrinal development, and the Christological relevance to spirituality. Teaching Content: First part: the philosophical foundation of Christology 1. Aristotle’s concept of “being” 2. Key premises in traditional scholastic philosophy 3. Contemporary philosophy: Kant’s transcendental philosophy, Marechal’s transcendental Thomism, Aquinas’s epistemological metaphysics, Heidegger’s phenomenological ontology and Rahner’s metaphysical anthropology Second part: the mystery of Christ 1. Classical Christology: Christologies of the early Church, and doctrines of the early Church Councils on Christology 2. Contemporary Christology: to explore the development of contemporary Christologies using Karl Rahner’s Christology as an example Third part: the mystery of Christ and its relation to spirituality To explore the self-transcendence of Jesus which is his life story, including his teaching, actions, suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension.
