Description | Teaching Objective: This course aims to help students appreciate and better understand the development of Christian doctrine in the history of the Church, an appreciation which is pivotal to their theological formation and maturation. Teaching Content: This course examines the development of Christian doctrine, through studying the most significant theological writers and themes in different periods of the history of the Church, from the patristic period to the medieval period—with particular references to Augustine of Hippo and Thomas Aquinas—and also the modern and contemporary eras. The course explores the characteristics, formulation, articulation and reception of various theological thoughts, the social, cultural and historical contexts from which they have emerged, and the contributing factors that have helped shape them.
