Description Teaching Objective:
The course focus on the dissemination of Christian faith in China with the main focus on Catholicism. It explores the interaction between the Catholic Faith and the Chinese society during different period of time with various significant events as the foci. The course attempts to employ analytical tools to interpret the dynamin between the Catholic Church and China for a comprehensive understand on the Catholicism’s cultural, religious, social and political impacts on China. This course will briefly include the Assyrian, Orthodox and Protestant Traditions in China.

Teaching Content:
This course includes a general introduction to the historiography of the Catholic Church in China. It covers the period between 635 AD and the present including topics such as the Catholic missionaries in Ming and Qing Court, the Rite Controversy, the Banning of Catholic Church, the Re-entering of missionaries, the Boxer Rebellion, the Indigenous Movement, the Catholic Church during the nationalist Government and the Sino—Japanese War, Catholic Church under the various phases of the People’s Republic of China.
