Description | Teaching Objective: Through this course, learners will be able to: 1. Analyze the biblical foundation of the Sacraments of Holy Orders and Matrimony 2. Explain the historical development of the Sacraments Holy Orders and Matrimony 3. Describe the celebration of the Sacraments of Holy Orders and Matrimony 4. Reflect on the Church’s teachings regarding the ethics of marriage 5. Reflect on the significance of the Sacrament of Holy Orders Teaching Content: The new edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church calls the sacraments of Holy Orders and Marriage "sacraments at the service of communion". The first part of this course explores the "Sacrament of Holy Orders". First, we will review the cultural situation and adaptation faced when the new holy order rite was promulgated, as well as the pastoral reality faced in the past forty years. After that, we will enter the source of the Bible and trace the origin of the priesthood; then, we will discuss the historical tradition, sacramental and liturgical theology of the sacrament of holy orders, and will also touch on the topic of ordinary priesthood of lay people; finally, we will raise several important issues related to the sacrament of holy orders, such as lifelong ministry, the relationship between priesthood and celibacy, and the ordination of women. In the meantime, we will also reflect on today's pastoral ministry based on "The Priest in the Third Millennium of Christ's Incarnation", which is the spiritual aspect of the sacrament of holy orders. The second part of this course will explore the "Sacrament of Marriage". We will understand the sacrament of marriage through the following topics: biblical theology of marriage, weddings in the Old Testament and the Jews, the history of marriage in the Western Church, weddings in the Eastern Church, the significance of marriage as a Christian sacrament from the reflection of marriage history, sacramental theology of marriage, the celebration theology of marriage in the Second Vatican Council, the practice of weddings in the Second Vatican Council, pastoral considerations and challenges of wedding celebrations, and the localization of weddings.
