Description | Teaching Objective: This course will introduce, through an analysis of the main contexts of Medieval thought, the contribution of Medieval thought to Catholic philosophy and theology, and to the world’s history of thought at large. Teaching Content: The Middle Ages was the “Golden Age” for the formation and development of the Catholic theological and philosophical system. This course will introduce medieval philosophy and its characteristics from 3 perspectives. 1) The adaptation and modification of ancient Greek thought by early Church Fathers and Christian thinkers, especially from Augustine, Pseudo-dionysius to Anselm, and to the later Franciscan school of thought. 2) The influence of Arabic thought on Western Europe, especially on the Doctors of the Church of the second half of the Middle Ages, like Albert the Great and Aquinas. 3) Renaissance’s impact on and challenge to the philosophy of the Church.
