General Information
Course Type On Campus
Course Category 1. Sacred Scripture
Description Teaching Objective:
Part I: As indicated by Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis no. 78, this course aims at giving the students an example of “the correct methods of exegesis”. Hopefully, the students will be aware of “what the main problems are and their solution” and be able to acquire a vision of the whole of Sacred Scripture with a clear insight into the principal chapters of the history of salvation”. This course on the Synoptic Gospels (Gospel according to Matthew, Gospel according to Mark, Gospel according to Luke) is especially suited to achieve all the above objectives inasmuch as it deals with “the principal chapter of the history of salvation”, namely, the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Messiah Son of God. In dealing with this principal and central chapter, there is added urgency to the need of “correct methods of exegesis” and of finding solutions for “the main problems”.

Part II: As prescribed by Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis no. 78, this course aims at giving the students an example of “the correct methods of exegesis”. Hopefully, the students will be aware of “what the main problems are and their solution” and be able to “acquire a vision of the whole of Sacred Scripture with a clear insight into the principal chapters of the history of salvation”. This course on the Acts of the Apostles is especially suited to achieve the latter objective inasmuch as it deals with a very particular “chapter of the history of salvation”, namely, the primitive life and work of the Church, a Church that continually takes into view (especially in the great Kerygmatic Discourses of Peter, Stephen, and Paul) the whole span of the history of salvation.

Teaching Content:
Part I:
The course starts with a study of how Dei Verbum 19 presents the unique literary form of “Gospel” as “history of the Jesus’mystery”. Then, in line with the Instruction Sancta Mater Ecclesia, the three levels of Gospel formation are analyzed (the Jesus level, the Oral Tradition level, and the Written Gospel level) together with the possibility this analysis offers for a solution of the fundamental historical questions posed by the four Gospels. Next, the three Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, and Luke are exegeted synoptically. No theory of priority will be presupposed. During the course, reading assignment will be given that will concentrate on selected passages from each of the ten sections in which the Synoptic Gospel outline has been divided for teaching purposes:
1. The Beginning of the Gospel in Matt, Mark, Luke
2. The Infancy Gospel in Matt and Luke
3. The Prelude to Jesus’ Public Ministry in Matt, Mark, Luke
4. The Inauguration of Jesus’ Public Ministry in Matt, Mark, Luke
5. Jesus’ Galilean Ministry by Work and Word in Matt, Mark, Luke
6. The Centre of the Gospel in Matt, Mark, Luke and Luke’s Jerusalem Journey Narrative
7. Jesus’ Judean and Jerusalem Ministry by Work and Word in Matt, Mark, Luke
8. Paschal Narrative I: Pascha of Love and Sacrament in Matt, Mark, Luke
9. Paschal Narrative II: Pascha of Suffering and Death in Matt, Mark, Luke
10. Paschal Narrative III: Pascha of Life and Glory in Matt, Mark, Luke

Part II:
The book of the Acts of the Apostles is studied according to the following approaches: its literary form, its structural unity with the Gospel according to Luke, the initial pericope and its zip-function with the last paragraph of the Gospel according to Luke, the setting and content of the Great Kergmatic Discourses, the threefold summary account of the primitive Jerusalem Church, the threefold narrative of St. Paul’s conversion, the threefold mention of Peter’s first preaching to the Gentiles, the Jerusalem Council and its relationship to Galatians 2, the pastoral testament of Paul to the Ephesian elders.
