General Information
Course Type On Campus
Course Category 5. Patristics and Church History
Description Teaching Objective:
To introduce students to the history of the Church in contemporary times (from the Renaissance and up to the Second Vatican Council), focusing on general ecclesial dynamics and central contributions (the Holy See); to enable students to historicize the ecclesial journey, knowing how to interpret it according to contemporary influences with a long-term perspective. “Thus, the Church, at once ‘a visible association and a spiritual community’, goes forward together with humanity and experiences the same earthly lot which the world does. She serves as a leaven and as a kind of soul for human society as it is to be renewed in Christ and transformed into God’s family” (GS 40).

Teaching Content:
Beginning with the Renascence, the course will explore the relationship between the Church and the surrounding world (politics, science, society, etc.). Emphasis will be placed on long-term phenomena and the introduction of new developments. Special attention will be given to the relationship between the Church and the world (the French Revolution, liberalism, democracy, totalitarianism), events of the universal Church such as the First and Second Vatican Councils, the internal life of the Church (theology, missions, liturgy, etc.), and the contributions of the Roman Centre (the Roman Curia, the College of Cardinals, papal diplomacy, Popes, etc.).
