Description Teaching Objective:
This course explores the brilliant achievements in the history of human civilization through the encounters of the ancient Greek polytheistic culture with the monotheistic religious traditions (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) flourished in the Middle Ages.

Teaching Content:
This course consists of two sections. The first section is an introduction to the ideas and contributions of the prominent thinkers in Ancient Greece and the Middle Ages. The second section focuses on Medieval thinkers’ effort to resolve the controversies of faith and reason, rooted in the conflicts between ancient Greek philosophical ideas and the doctrines of Christianity, such as, eternal world, creatio ex nihilo, predestination, nominalism, unity of virtues and unity of human intellect.
